The Ram girls basketball team improved to 6-5 in the Heart of Iowa Activities Conference and 6-7 overall with a 65-52 win over the CMB Raiders of Maxwell in Jefferson Tuesday.
A trio of seniors – Kayla Mobley, Stacy Mears and Hannah Onken – scored in double figures for the game. Team leader Mobley had 20 points, Mears was close behind with 17 points and Onken scored 12.
Mears scored nine of her points as 3-point shots. Senior Tressa Rasmussen scored seven points and Jolee Wessling scored five. Each of them scored a long basket. Senior Marissa Promes and sophomore Kenna Marquardt both scored two points.
“It was nice to get another win,” said coach Chad Morton. “I thought it was a good team effort. It is good to have scored 65 points and to have three girls in double digit scoring. I also thought we rebounded the ball better tonight. The girls did a good job of taking care of the ball and hitting free throws at the end of the game.”
In the fourth quarter, Mears was made four of five at the free throw line, Wessling made two of four and Rasmussen made one of two. For the entire game, the Rams were 50 percent at the line, with Mears at 75 percent, Wessling at 50 percent, and Mobley and Rasmussen at 40 percent.
The Rams were up 17-14 after one quarter and 32-28 at halftime, but the Raiders had been up 27-25 with only about a minute to play in the half. That was the last time they led in the game. The score after three quarters was 46-37, and the Rams steadily built their lead in the fourth quarter.
The CMB Raiders are now 2-10 in the HOIAC and 2-13 overall.
The game was a “Pink Out” game, with the girls wearing special pink uniforms. They had conducted fundraisers prior to the game, including selling Pink Out T-shirts, and there were silent auctions during the game and a “Chuck a Duck” between the girls and the boys games to raise funds for Relay for Life and the American Cancer Society.
